Depression is a mood disorder that affects one’s thoughts, behaviors and emotions often causing a prolonged depressed mood and other symptoms severely impacting an individual’s ability to live a normal life. Of the estimated 300 million people who suffer from depression worldwide, 33% are treatment-resistant (TRD). TRD occurs when someone with depression does not experience symptom improvement, despite trying at least two different antidepressants.
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders worldwide, affecting how one experiences worry, fear and anxiety in everyday situations. Social anxiety disorder (SAD), which impacts 5-10% of the population, causes one to experience intense fear, self-consciousness and embarrassment in social interactions. While there are treatment options, no new medicines have been approved for SAD in over 20 years.
Schizophrenia is a severe mental health disorder that impairs one’s thought processes, perceptions, emotional responsiveness and social interactions.Of the 24 million people worldwide living with schizophrenia, most are likely to experience hallucinations and/or delusions, leading them to perceive the world around them differently. Difficulty expressing emotion and apathy are common and lead to a withdrawal from social life. Cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia (CIAS) impacts an individual’s ability to think, learn, remember, use judgement, and make decisions, and affects 80% of those living with the disorder.
